Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)

SSL is a now-deprecated cryptographic protocol, designed to provide privacy, data and communication security within a computer network.

Its successor is currently widely implemented Transport Layer Security (TLS), developed based on the SSL 3.0 protocol.
