Container Terminal Management System - ContCloud

<< back to glossary

The Container Terminal Management System (CTMS for short) is a set of utilities that streamlines cargo management and storage in ports and container facilities. Competent and reliable container management systems are often tied to Terminal Operating Systems (TOS) that optimize cargo and depot management.

Container terminals have to deal with enormous volumes of information because over 9/10 of the word's trade is transported through the sea. It's virtually impossible to manage all of this data without incorporating terminals software and digitalizing the information.

The container terminal system helps storage facilities utilize the information about cargo, yard, and vessels much faster and efficiently. It works as a database that manages resources at container facilities. This system uses wireless Radio Frequency (RF) terminals and special networks to collect the appropriate data.

It’s not just a data storage software - Container Terminal Management System can effectively optimize the cargo allocation in the yard, as well as inbound and outbound procedures.

For instance, the container system can quickly find the right location for a container based on a selected number of factors. Then, it will automatically deliver the information to the personnel in order for them to move the cargo to the chosen place. In addition to that, CTMS can even pick the Container Handling Equipment (CHE) for the operations.

Some of the processes that the Container operating system can streamline include:

  • Containers & Cargo
  • Container Handling Equipment
  • Vessels
  • Yards
  • Trucks
  • Human workforce

CTMS also deals with gate management. It automates most of the gate procedures to enhance productivity and turnaround times. Also, it's responsible for security gradings at both free trade zones and harbors. A proper CTMS solution will record all crucial procedures in the port or depot. For example, it will fixate what kind of transport (cargo vehicle, truck, vessel, train, private transport, and others) enters the area, record when it happens, and indicate what this transport has on board.

The container operating system can take care of the billing as well. It will generate exhaustive reports and record all invoices that are relevant to cargo management and other critical container terminal operations.

Basically, CTMS provides the automatization for most of the processes in the container terminal. As a result, it significantly increases the cost-efficiency of the operations. Consequently, it also improves revenue for ports, container facilities, and vendors.

In addition to data management, CTMS helps control the movement of various cargo types and helps make better use of the workforce, equipment, and other assets.

Nowadays, larger container terminals and depots use Terminal Operating Systems (TOS) to facilitate meeting supply chain requirements, cargo control, vessel allocation and other complex processes. The best Container Terminal Management platforms allow to monitor and utilize all recorded information with user-intuitive tools. It can even be used to train the employees in cargo management operations.
